Herbs

Happy 9/9/9! :)

Poll time!

What are your favorite herbs to cook with and eat? What is the one herb you cannot live without?

What herbs do you not like?

Me? I love herbs. (that sounds wrong...)

My favorites are cilantro, thyme, basil, rosemary, oregano, mint.
If I had to pick one....gosh, cilantro? It's so versatile - goes with Latin, Asian, Indian foods. Second fav would probably be thyme. But please tell me that I never have to pick just one.

I do not really like parsley. Or dill.

There are so many others - marjoram, sage, lemongrass, shiso, epazote, curry leaf, lemon verbena, kaffir lime, bay leaves!!! YUM!

What about YOU? Any favorite or hated leafy seasonings?

Next time we will talk about spices! :) Perhaps you have noticed I am using one a lot lately? My new favorite!

  5. I love basil and cilantro. My grandma says cilantro smells like dirty socks, isn't that funny? Some people hate it! I love dill though and you don't, what's up with that? I like rosemary but I'm kind of neutral on thyme and oregano, they are so strong to me. I noticed this one herb at my farmer's market that started with a "p" but I can't remember the name of it. The guy told me that it has lots of omega-3 fatty acids in it but it tasted icky.

  6. Hi Carrie!!!
A lot of people hate cilantro...my brother for one! I have to make him salsa without it. How lame is that? :)
You love dill? I dunno, it just doesn't do anything for me.

Maybe the herb you are talking about is purslane? It's not really an herb- more of a green veggie (weed). Better cooked imho. It's great sauteed, or throw it in your curry next time (at the end).

  8. Yes it shocks me too that some people hate cilantro. An informal, non-statistically significant poll I conducted found men more likely to dislike cilantro than women, with more than one claiming it tastes "just like dish soap".

    your dove of love,
    Shelly
PS I guess I should get back on my gmail so I can log on instead of using anon...;) The husband caught a silver salmon tonight and grilled it. I had to try some (broke me code!) Just a little bite though.

  9. You are right, it was purslane! I'll try it cooked next time, it tastes like grass when it's raw...yuck! You are so smart, by the way.

  10. Hi Alisha! Thanks for commenting! Thai basil is so yummy! Good one! :)

Miss Shelly - I heard somewhere that there is a gene that controls for cilantro loving or hating. Maybe it correlates with being able to roll your tongue? haha
I love that your hubby is a fisherman/hunter. Can I come over for dinner? I won't say "yummy"...hehe.

Carrie, I love it when I am right! ;) It hardly ever happens. Try it cooked - I think it's very good!
